Hack The Moving Process And Get To Your Destination Sooner

Moving can feel like it consumes your life for weeks on end. Chances are, you just want to get it over with and get into your new home already! If you hack the moving process, you can do just that. Here are some hacks to get you started.

1. Have a volunteer organization pick up your donations.

Getting rid of things before moving reduces the amount of stuff you have to pack and carry out to the moving truck. But this won't save you any time if you then have to take five trips to the donation center. A better hack is to have the volunteer organization that collects donations come to you. Many veterans organizations and the Salvation Army offer this service, and you can sign up online. You just stack everything on your porch as you come across it, and they stop by to pick it up -- you don't even need to be there.

2. Use labels sparingly.

You've probably seen pictures of moving boxes labeled in the utmost detail. There's really no need to label the box with each of its contents. As long as you know what room it belongs in, you can sort your boxes into rooms after you move. That's good enough. Label boxes with a room name only, such as bathroom or kitchen, and leave it at that.

3. Put the big items in the truck first.

If you pack the moving truck with boxes, reach the end, and realize the mattress does not fit -- you'll have to unpack and repack everything. Save yourself time by putting the big things into the truck first. Then, load the smaller things around the larger things. If you have a few small boxes that don't fit in the truck, you can easily ship them or take them with you in your car. The same can't be said for a big thing like a mattress or fridge.

4. Leave things in drawers.

Why take everything out of your dresser drawers when the drawers are basically boxes? Just use some blue painter's tape to secure the drawers closed. (Don't use masking tape -- it might leave a mark when you later peel it off.) You'll save space in the moving truck, and you won't waste time having to empty and then reload your drawers later on.

5. Keep your clothing on hangers.

There's no need to take your clothing off hangers, either! Just cut a small hole in the top of a plastic garbage bag. Push a few hung clothing items together, and then pull the bag over the bundle of clothing, poking the hangers through the hole in the top. Your clothing will be protected from spills and even rainwater, and you didn't have to waste time folding or rolling them up.

6. Pack tiny items in egg cartons.

One of the hardest, most time-consuming parts of packing is trying to pack those tiny, little things like jewelry and watch batteries. Cut the hassle by putting all of these little things in an egg carton. Tape the egg carton closed, and all of your items will stay in place and protected. You can even use multiple egg cartons and tape them all together to keep your many tiny items in one place.

7. Rubber band the doorknob open.

Having to open and close the door each time you take boxes out to the truck can take a lot of time. Place a rubber band around the latch of the door so it does not latch into the frame. This way, you can push through it with a box as you're carrying the box. (Lock pets in a room so they can't escape while the door is open.)
